Methods of Cutting a Glass
If you are planning to work on glass, you must be aware of certain facts. As everyone knows that glass is usually brittle and can break easily if not cared. Glasses are commonly found everywhere in one form or another.
It is not always possible to have glass merchant to cut a glass for you. But it is obvious that there is no best substitute of glass merchants who cut a glass with precision and accuracy without much effort. You must be aware of the fact that if ever you fell in a situation where you have to cut a glass for yourself, how you can do it. Cutting glass is not the end; you need to smooth the edges as well. All this you can do if you have a proper know how about cutting a glass.
Glass cutter is used to cut the glass. Before starting cutting a glass, make sure that you have rested the glass over an even leveled surface with proper padding like felt, old rags, carpet or few layers of newspaper. Glass cutter is used to cut a glass by scoring a line to the required length of the glass. This line is then taken as guide and pressure is exerted on both side of the line, until line breaks. If your glass has patterns, use the back side, i.e. plain side to cut the glass.
Soak the glass cutter with white spirit or paraffin before cutting the glass. Some glass cutters have a single small hardened steel wheel, while others even have six such wheels to score a line. For marking the cutting line, use felt pen. Never use a waxed pencil for marking the line.
While cutting a line on glass make sure that you score a line in one continuous stroke. Position of the cutter is also important while cutting a glass. Hold the cutter like as pencil and the angle should be 60 degrees to the glass. To keep the line straight use T-square or straight edge. While scoring a line do not put too much pressure on the glass surface – this may cause chip.
After scoring a line on the glass, place a wooden lath or any other object right under the score and put some pressure on each of the two sides. You can also tap the bottom of the score with glass cutter handle. Tapping is very handy for thin glass layers. You can use pliers, pincers or slots in the handle (often available in some glass cutters) to pinch the score line. These slots on glass cutter handle are usually known as breaker rack. They are of different sizes and can be used according to the thickness of the glass.
Once you are done with cutting the glass, now you have to smooth the edges of the glass. You can use oilstone damped with water to smooth the edges of the glass. Fine glass and support block can also be used to smooth the edges. Another available option is the breaker rack.

Can anyone help me with some questions I have about John Swifts "A Modest Proposal"?
Well the paragraph going with this question is short:
What are some of the ussumptions underlying paragraph 7?
"I am assured byour merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve years old is no salable commoditiy; and even when they come to this age they will not yeild above 3euros or 3 euroes.2s.6d.(note: this is some form of currency) at most on the exchange: which cannot turn to account either to the parents or kingdom, the change of nutriment and rags having been at least four times that value"
My answer is that:
There is the assumtion that children are poor and that children are commodities; that after a certain age( according to the reading over 1 years old) children arent' worth anything or the trouble.
Is this right? Can anyone elaborate on this answer or clean it up?
You have to take the whole work into account, and you have to kind of know the history in Ireland at that time. There were many poor people and they were having tons of children. Swift is saying that he has a "modest proposal". Basically they are going to raise babies to one year old, which wouldn't cost much becuase you can just feed them natural milk from the mom. Once they are one year of age, they will be made into food and or clothing. At 6 they can pick pocket and any older they aren't worth very much and they cost more than what you can gain by selling them, so you must sell them when they are babies to Americans.
